Department of Botany established in 1959 by (Late) Professor J.J. Chinoy is known all over for researches on Ascorbic acid, Growth and Development, Stress Physiology (Salt and Drought resistance) and Pre-sowing seed treatments. Department has received many research grants from US - PL 480, DST, ICAR, UGC, CSIR, Gujarat Government, NGOs, Industries and other funding agencies etc. Presently, the thrust areas of research have diversified to Stress Physiology, Plant Biotechnology, Plant Biodiversity-Floristic, Systematic Botany, Horticulture, Floriculture, Medicinal plantsPhytochemistry,Ecology, Environmental Biology, Medicinal plants, Fungal Biology, Plant physiology, Palynology, Phytoremediation, Seed technology, Plant Biochemistry,Phycology, Taxonomy, Bioinformatics, Climate Change Impacts Management, Horticultural Science and Garden Management, Plant Tissue Culture and Biodiversity Management.
To impart knowledge and training in the front - line areas of plant sciences.The goal is to equip graduate and post-graduate students to learn and achieve specialization for respective new job opportunities. Moreover, with such training they will be great entrepreneurs to start new prosperous ventures.
The department is aiming at becoming "Center for Excellence" for training and capacity building with dynamic requirements of time in Plant Sciences, Bioinformatics and Climate Change Impacts Management. THE CULTURE The department has a very good and serine atmosphere for study. Our aim has always been to focus on the human dimension. The department brings us together with exceptionally supportive faculty members, students and alumni. The faculty aims to inculcate in the students a culture characterized by integrity, mutual respect, enthusiasm, and hard work. GUBS (Gujarat University Botanical Society) is a society of staff-students of the department and being coordinated by office bearers. GUBS organizes lots of curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities for the overall development of the students. GUBS website showcases the activities of the society. Ankur - the eNews letter is being published by GUBS. It provides a platform to members to share and publish articles and reports.
More than 1500 students have completed their study from the department. The alumni are very well placed in India and abroad. Many of them hold senior positions in Government, Universities, Institutes and Corporate sectors while some are also successful entrepreneurs. They have contributed significantly in all the areas of plant science and have proved to be an invaluable asset to their respective organizations. Proudly, designated as GULAB - Gujarat University Learned Alumni of Botany, they offer their insights and experiences to students of the department and share career advice through formal and informal exchanges.
