Department of Philosophy, though small is always academically very active in all these years. The Department arranged 21 days UGC Workshop in 1985. The Department hosted Indian Philosophical Congress in 1989. The Department organized International Social Philosophy Congress in 1991. (During tenure of Dr. J.A.Yajnik) Two days regional level seminar on Indian Philosophy was arranged in 1998. The National Seminar on Advaita Philosophy was organized by the Department in 2000, in association with ICPR. The Department organized a two-day National Seminar on Jainism in 2001. The Department has organized International Conference on World Peace in 2003, in which 300 delegates from 22 different countries from all over the world participated and more than 210 Research Papers were presented. The Department has brought out Souvenir and Abstract of Papers at the time of Conference. Department has also brought out the proceedings of the International Conference on World Peace in Two Volumes containing more than 750 pages in 2006. The Department has organised workshop on  “Impact of Environment on Global Peace” in 2006. Department has also organized One Day International Seminar on “Innovative Approaches to Peace in a Changing Global environment” in 2007. Department has organised special lecture on “Ecology and Indian Tradition” by Prof. Christopher K. Chapal, USA and felicitation of Shri Navinbhai Doshi, known Philanthropist of Indo-American, on 29th December, 2007. One day workshop on “Body Language” was also organised by the Department in association with Psychology Department in the year 2008. Special lecture by Dr. Y.K. Alagh and Book release function was organised on 7th February, 2008 by the Department. The department has organised a two days international seminar on ‘Globalization, Values and World Peace” in January 2011. The abstract and Dr. Shastris felicitation volume – “World of Philosophy – a harmony” was published by the Department of Philosophy. The Department has successfully guided more than 60 M.Phil Students and 30 Ph.D. Students so far. In M.A. Programme average 25 to 30 students.

Syllabus of Entire M.A. and M.Phil in Philosophy is formed and revised in 2010, 2013 as well as 2017 for CBCS  semester system adopted since 2010. Further, Seven students of the Department got National Level Fellowships. The Department  has successfully guided more than 50 M.Phil. students and 20 Ph.D. students so far. Seven students are working under Prof. Y.S. Shastri  for their Doctoral thesis. Experts in this subject are very often invited to address the  students. Assignment system has been introduced  along with seminar system  to improve the academic standard  of the students.

The mission of the Dept. of Philosophy is to create A Critical, Creative, Comprehensive and an Inquiring Mind capable for Research Potential.
Education is to be filled with knowledge, awareness and action to create a commune of critical mass with academic capabilities and tender behaviour, is the demand of the present day education as recognized by Acharya Shree Anadshankar Dhruva the pioneer and a visionary of Gujarat University.Dissemination of the knowledge of Philosophy, Indian as well as western and to update the research potential in Philosophy is the concern and care of Post Graduate Department of Philosophy. It ensures interdisciplinary and comprehensive insight to students.
